Expression
Look natural while meeting official requirements
The Neutral Look
Most countries require a "neutral expression" for official photos. This means a relaxed, natural face—not tense or forced. Think of the expression you make when listening to someone speak.
- 1Keep your mouth closed with lips relaxed
- 2Both eyes must be open and clearly visible
- 3Avoid raising your eyebrows or squinting
- 4A slight, natural smile is acceptable in most cases
Eye Contact
Your eyes are the most important feature for identification. Look directly at the camera lens—imagine making eye contact with someone standing right behind it.
- 1Look straight at the lens, not at the screen or viewfinder
- 2Keep both eyes equally open
- 3Avoid looking up, down, or to the side
- 4If you wear glasses, check your country's rules—US bans glasses since 2016
"A subtle smile is acceptable—just keep it natural"
Relaxation
A tense face photographs poorly. Before your shot, take a moment to relax. This prevents the "deer in headlights" look that plagues many ID photos.
- 1Take a deep breath and exhale slowly before the shot
- 2Slightly part your lips, then close them gently
- 3Think of something mildly pleasant to avoid a stern expression
- 4Do a few practice shots to get comfortable
Head Position
Your head must be straight and centered. Tilting or turning will likely result in rejection, as it affects biometric measurements.
- 1Face the camera directly—no tilting left or right
- 2Keep your chin level, not raised or lowered
- 3Ensure your head is centered in the frame
- 4Both ears should be equally visible if not covered by hair
