Positioning
Camera distance, framing, and posture
Camera Distance
The distance between you and the camera affects how your face appears. Too close creates distortion; too far loses detail. The sweet spot is about 4–6 feet away.
- 1Position the camera about 5 feet (1.5 meters) from your face
- 2Use the rear camera of your phone, not the selfie camera
- 3Avoid wide-angle lenses—they distort facial features
- 4Zoom in slightly if needed, rather than moving closer
Framing
Proper framing ensures your face is captured at the right size and position. Your head should occupy roughly 70–80% of the frame height.
- 1Center your face in the frame
- 2Include your shoulders in the shot
- 3Leave space above your head—about 1/8 of the frame
- 4Ensure your entire face is visible, hairline to chin
"5 feet away, eye level—the magic formula"
Posture
Good posture makes you look more alert and professional. It also ensures your face is at the correct angle to the camera.
- 1Sit or stand up straight
- 2Keep your shoulders back and relaxed
- 3Face the camera squarely—shoulders parallel to the lens
- 4Avoid leaning forward or backward
Equipment
You don't need professional equipment to get professional results. A smartphone with a decent camera and basic setup is all you need.
- 1Use a tripod or stable surface—no handheld shots
- 2Set a timer so you can position yourself properly
- 3Use the rear camera for better quality
- 4Ask someone else to take the photo if possible
