Most common rejection reasons
- 1A wide smile or an open mouthKeep your mouth closed with a plain expression. HM Passport Office rejects photos where a wide smile or an open mouth changes the shape of your face.
- 2A digitally enhanced faceRetouching such as altering the hairline, removing blemishes or reshaping features is rejected, and so are filters that add effects or change your apparent age.
- 3A black and white photoHM Passport Office does not accept black and white digital or paper photos. Use a colour photo.
- 4A photo that is not clearPhotos that do not show a clear image of you, for example because they are blurry, too dark or too light, are not accepted.

Children under 6 do not have to look at the camera or have a plain expression. Babies under 1 do not need their eyes open. Every child must be alone in the photo, and babies must not hold toys or use dummies.

A photo booth or shop can give you a photo code. You enter it during your application and the digital photo is added for you. Taking your own photo works too. GOV.UK says booth and shop photos are more likely to be approved than one taken on your own device.
