Green card photo: the December 2025 policy change

As of December 12, 2025, USCIS no longer accepts self-submitted photos for most domestic filings — including I-485 and I-90. Your photo is captured at the Application Support Center (ASC) during biometrics.

You still need your own compliant photos if you are:

  • Applying through DS-260 consular processing
  • Entering the DV Lottery (digital entry + printed for the interview)
  • Filing from outside the United States
  • Preparing for an I-485 interview (officers may request updated photos)

30-day recency

USCIS requires photos taken within 30 days of filing — much stricter than the 6-month passport rule. This is the most common Green Card RFE cause.

DV Lottery digital spec

JPEG, square, 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 px, under 240 KB. Each family member needs a separate photo. Reusing an old DV Lottery photo (must be within 6 months) is grounds for disqualification.

Glasses are not permitted since November 2016 — no exceptions without a signed medical statement.
