Why a 2x2 cropper isn't enough

A simple cropper resizes to 600 x 600 pixels and stops there. The State Department also checks head-to-frame ratio (50–69% of frame height), eye line position (upper third), background uniformity, expression, and glasses. A photo that passes a basic cropper still gets rejected on any of those.

The fastest way to know if a converted photo is compliant is to feed it through a validator that runs all the State Department checks — not just dimensions. Snap2Pass validates against the same checklist the passport agency uses and flags any failure before you submit.

What's different about 2x2

The 2 x 2 inch square format is used by the US (passport, visa, green card, USCIS) and the Indian visa. Most other countries use 35 x 45 mm portrait, not a square — see Passport Size Photo for the full mapping. Converting a 2 x 2 to 35 x 45 (or vice versa) is not just a crop — the head position changes because the aspect ratio is different, and the head-height-to-frame ratio shifts. Always start from a source photo and convert to one target, never re-convert between formats.

For US online passport renewal, the system actually wants a digital file with specific pixel dimensions (600–1200 px square, 54 KB–10 MB JPEG/HEIF) — see Passport Photo Online for the digital upload rules.

2026 rule that catches converters

Under January 2026 State Department rules, AI-edited or beauty-filtered photos are rejected on sight. Snap2Pass validates and resizes only — it never alters your appearance, skin, or facial features.

The rule applies to any modification of facial features: portrait-mode background blur, skin smoothing, eye enhancement, and any other AI retouch. Resizing, cropping, and replacing a non-uniform background with a flat white are all explicitly allowed because they don't change how you look — only how you're framed.
