Good to know
German Passport rules, reviewed by Sandra Chen · Sep 2026
Most common rejection reasons
- 1A smile or open mouthThe expression must be neutral, looking straight into the camera with the mouth closed.
- 2Eyes not clearly visibleHair, red-eye or lens reflections that hide the eyes fail the check.
- 3Retouching, filters or soft focusThe photo has to show natural skin tones and be sharp; edited or blurred faces do not meet the standard.
Snap2Pass never edits your face. It replaces the background and crops the photo to size, nothing else.
Also worth knowing
- Rule change · since May 2025Digital photos only since 1 May 2025
German passport offices now use digital biometric photos for applications. A photographer uploads it to a secure cloud and you receive a Data Matrix code for the office to scan, or you have it taken at the passport office where that is offered.

Munich advises that its self-service photo terminals can be unreliable for babies and small children, because of the neutral-expression and head-position rules, and recommends a certified studio instead.
Source ↗ - Who takes the photoTaking the photo yourself
A photo you make at home does not reach the office: the application uses a digital photo captured by a registered photographer or at the passport office itself.
