JustineUK baby passport photo: the most lenient infant rules in the world
For babies under 1 year old, HM Passport Office explicitly allows:
- Closed or partially closed eyes — no rejection for sleeping babies
- Any expression — no neutral-expression requirement
- Supported photos — you can hold the baby, as long as your hands, arms, and shoulders are not visible in the final frame
For children 1–5: looking at the camera with mouth closed is required, but a perfectly neutral expression is not.
Recency: 1 month, not 6
The UK requires baby photos taken within the last month — much stricter than the US 6-month rule.
Background and size
- 35 x 45 mm portrait (not the US 2 x 2 inches — using the US format will be rejected)
- Light grey or cream background — pure white can be flagged as over-exposed
Countersignature
First-time UK baby passport applications need a countersignatory in an approved profession to sign both the form and the back of one printed photo. See gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications.
