Most common rejection reasons
- 1Face not centredThe Immigration Department does not accept a photo in which the face is off-centre. Centre your face and leave headroom above it.
- 2Hair across the eyes or eyebrowsPush hair back so both eyes and both eyebrows are fully visible.
- 3Flash reflection on the faceReflection on the face is a listed reason for refusal. Light your face evenly and avoid a direct flash.
- 4Shadows on the face or backgroundShadows are a listed reason for refusal. Face a window or a soft light and stand away from the wall.
- 5Too light or too darkA photo that is too light or too dark is not accepted. Check the exposure before you submit.
Snap2Pass never edits your face. It replaces the background and crops the photo to size, nothing else.
Also worth knowing
- Online applicationAn upload is not a confirmed pass
When you apply online or in the Immigration Department mobile app, the department says a successfully uploaded photo has not yet been judged acceptable. If needed, it may ask you to submit another photograph.
Source ↗ - PaperworkPrinted photos: do not fold, staple or write on them
Do not fold the printed photograph, staple it, write on the back or attach it with a paper clip, because it can then no longer be used for the passport. An application by post or drop-in with a substandard photograph is not processed and is returned.

A Chinese visa is issued by the Chinese embassy or visa centre, not the HKSAR Immigration Department, and uses a different specification. The two photos are not interchangeable.
