Chinese visa photo: COVA gotchas the app handles for you
The COVA portal (consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA) rejects compliant photos for a few quirks the studio down the street won't know about:
- File size has a hard band: 40–120 KB. Files outside this range are rejected at upload.
- The "Photo check failed" error is a known COVA bug. If your photo meets the specs, submit anyway — manual review accepts it.
- You still need a printed 33 x 48 mm copy to attach to your printed COVA form at the consulate, even after a successful digital upload.
The bangs trap
The most common rejection. Pin back all bangs — forehead and both eyebrows must be fully visible. Side-swept bangs that cover one eyebrow still trigger rejection.
