Online passport renewal: the digital file rules that matter
The US State Department online passport renewal accepts a digital photo upload — but only if it meets the exact file rules:
- Square aspect ratio, 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels
- JPEG or HEIF, 54 KB to 10 MB
- No AI editing or beauty filters — under January 2026 rules, altered photos are rejected on sight
The system also checks head-to-frame ratio (50–69%), eye-line position (upper third of frame), background uniformity (plain white or off-white), and glasses (no longer permitted since November 2016 without a signed medical statement). Passing dimensions is necessary but not sufficient — every check has to pass.
Why pharmacy prints don't work for online renewal
Pharmacies and post offices give you printed photos. The State Department online renewal requires a digital file with specific pixel dimensions and file size — a scan of a printed photo usually fails the head-to-frame ratio check after the second resize, because every conversion (camera → print → scanner) shifts the framing.
If you need both formats (digital for renewal + prints for an in-person follow-up), generate them from the same compliant source photo rather than scanning a print. Snap2Pass outputs both: a digital JPEG sized for online renewal and a 4 x 6 print sheet you can take to Walgreens or CVS for cutting.
What to do if your file is over 10 MB
Modern phones produce 4–12 MB photos by default. The State Department will reject anything over 10 MB at upload, even if the dimensions are correct. Compress to ~3 MB using JPEG quality 85 — anything lower starts to show artifacts at the edges of facial features, which can trigger separate rejection on quality. See Passport Photo at Home for lighting and distance tips that reduce the need for post-processing.
