US visa photo: DS-160 has a tighter file size than a passport
DS-160 (Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application) is stricter than online passport renewal on file size — and the portal won't tell you what failed:
| DS-160 upload | Online passport renewal | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | JPEG only | JPEG or HEIF |
| Pixels | 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 | 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 |
| File size | Under 240 KB | 54 KB to 10 MB |
| Recency | Within 6 months | Within 6 months |
Modern phone photos are 3–8 MB — they pass passport renewal upload but fail DS-160 without proper JPEG compression.
The interview also needs printed copies
Two 2 x 2 inch glossy prints for the embassy interview, identical to the DS-160 photo. Most applicants only realize this the day before. Generate both formats from the same source photo so the prints match what was uploaded.
No glasses since November 2016 — no exceptions without a signed medical statement.
