US visa photo cropper: the DS-160 file size trap

DS-160 (Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application) rejects uploads silently if they violate any of three rules:

RuleDS-160 spec
FormatJPEG only — PNG and HEIC rejected
AspectSquare (1:1) — rectangular crops fail
File sizeUnder 240 KB

Modern phone photos are 3–8 MB. Simply resizing to 600 x 600 pixels often leaves the file over 240 KB — you need real JPEG compression, not just dimension change, to land under the limit without softening the face.

Two formats from one source

The embassy interview also needs two 2 x 2 inch glossy prints at 300 DPI, identical to the DS-160 upload. Both come from the same source photo — don't crop separately, or the prints won't match.

Head-to-frame ratio still matters after cropping

A correctly cropped square photo still fails if the head isn't 50–69% of the frame height. Eyes must sit in the upper third.
