Most common rejection reasons
- 1A blurry, grainy or pixelated photoThe State Department rejects blurry, grainy or pixelated photos and photos taken too close or too far away. Use a sharp, high-resolution original.
- 2Shadows or glare on the faceShadows on the face, and anything else that obscures it, cause problems. Light your face evenly.
- 3A scan of a printed photoLow-quality scans of a printed photo are not acceptable as a digital image. Upload the original digital photo.
- 4A digitally altered photoPhotos must not be enhanced or altered to change your appearance. That includes removing red-eye with an editing tool.
- 5A photo that no longer looks like youIf a photo does not reflect your current appearance, even a recent one, the consulate will ask for a new one. Minor changes such as a beard or hair colour do not usually count.
