SandraCanadian passport photo: the back-of-photo rule
Canada uses 50 x 70 mm (not 2 x 2 inches), with the head measuring 31–36 mm from chin to crown. The detail that catches most applicants: the back of one of the two photos must show the date the photo was taken plus the photo studio name and complete address (or a stamp).
If you take the photo yourself, someone who knows you can sign the back to confirm your identity — Passport Canada accepts this.
Print paper
Home inkjet prints are explicitly not accepted. Photos must be printed on professional photo-lab paper. A pharmacy or photo lab is the cheapest acceptable option.
Glasses
Prescription glasses are allowed if there is no glare hiding your eyes. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not — even if prescription.
Both photos must be identical
The two prints you submit must come from the same exposure — not two photos from the same session. Print both from one source file so dimensions, lighting, and crop match exactly.

Common rejection reasons at IRCC
- ⚠No photographer stamp on the back of one photo — IRCC mandates: photographer name, studio address, and date taken stamped or printed on the back of one of the two prints
- ⚠Glasses (since November 2016) — even prescription frames; medical exception requires a doctor letter signed within 6 months
- ⚠Photo not exactly 50×70mm — IRCC enforces strict size; ±0.5mm causes rejection at the passport office
- ⚠Background not plain white or off-white — patterned, coloured, or shadowed backgrounds rejected; this matches the US passport spec
